Welcome to Life on the Plus Side! My name is Jade Elouise, and I am the creator of the site. I am a psychology and criminology student at Sussex University in Brighton. While at university, my issues with depression and anxiety worsened, and I eventually decided to take a year out to work on my mental wellbeing. Over this year, I have ended up working as a copywriter, taking part in a plus size beauty pageant and been involved in a BBC3 documentary. I also started contributing articles to The Unedit online magazine, and now, I’ve started this site! So, I am pleased to report that it has definitely been the year of change and self discovery that I had hoped it would be!
Why this magazine?
Fiction has always been an outlet for me. The first book I ever remember reading was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone. My mum would read it to me at night before I went to bed, and she’d be so tired from a day at work that she would fall asleep while reading, so I took to reading it to her after she fell asleep. Then, as I grew older, I would spend hours just reading by myself, despite my friend’s best efforts to get me to spend some time with them instead. To me, life was just a little bit too mundane, and I just enjoyed the company of the characters in each of the fictional worlds I explored.
It didn’t take me long before living in the worlds of other writers wasn’t enough for me anymore: I wanted to create stories of my own. Both fictional writing, and expression my thoughts through poetry and non-fiction articles have gotten me through a lot of tough times: from battle eating disorders and issues with body image, to coming to terms with grief and other traumas from my past, and fighting mental health issues.
And now, I want to create a space where people can come for writing which addresses these important social issues, as well as for creative writing which they can use for an escape from life when they need it most, just as I have all these years.
About Life on the Plus Side
There are many people out there that think being on the ‘plus side’ in terms of weight is a negative thing, but being fat my whole life has actually taught me a lot. Due to being different because of my size and ethnicity, as well as the everyday marginalisation’s that all women face, I’ve learnt how to face adversity with kindness, compassion and education. Everything that I have been through and learnt in my life has taught me that the best thing to do is to look on the plus side of life, and encourage others to do the same. Which is why this blog was born!
I want to create a space where people can go when in need of advice, when they want to connect with the world and to feel a sense of community. I want this to be an all inclusive space, so if you feel as though there is anything missing from the blog that you’d love to see, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
I am always happy to receive submissions of writing and art work if people would like to share their work with the world, so if you would like to get involved, head over to the contributors page for more information.
